Project Reframe (2022)

The Mile

A project by Bush Hills STEAM Academy

Bush Hills STEAM Academy was one of our 3 schools we worked with as part of the Reframe Project with Sidewalk Film Festival.

For our 2022 Reframe Project at Bush Hills, we worked with Bush Hills STEAM Academy 7th grade students. With teacher Dale Simmons, Flourish teaching artists Erika Wade and Jahman Hill taught students the process of filmmaking with the theme heroes, where students created their own heroes to solve issues they deal with daily.

From scriptwriting to acting and cinematography, the students learned a ton over this journey. And be warned: the film will tackle topics of anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia.

Take a look at Birmingham through the eyes of the 7th graders at Bush Hills STEAM Academy.

2021 REFRAME

Malachi Wilkerson Middle School

Wilkerson Middle School was one of the 3 schools we worked with as part of the Reframe Project with Sidewalk Film Festival.

Over the last few months, Mr. Eric Marable worked with Ms. Camelia Brownlee’s 7th Grade Theatre class at Malachi Wilkerson Middle School. These students had the honor of researching and recreating one of the most exciting periods of culture and innovation in history: The Harlem Renaissance. Now, we have the leaders of this movement returning to discuss their legacy. Without further ado, let's explore the Harlem Renaissance with Malachi Wilkerson Middle School!

Green Acres Middle School

Green Acres Middle School was one of the 3 schools we worked last year with as part of the Reframe Project with Sidewalk Film Festival.

Here, we’ll be watching the films from their talented 7th grade students. Working with Mr. Jahman Hill, Mr. Eric Marable Jr., and their teacher, Mr. Jerry Strickland, students explored “Capital Conversations”. Applying what they’ve been learning in their civics class, students created 1-minute videos of conversations on the state of our government. Topics ranged from voting rights to thoughts on amendments. The students learned how to write dialogue and shoot scenes with multiple characters. Our goal was to help students understand different political issues through conversation. Let’s take a look at how the seventh graders of Green Acres Middle School created Capitol Conversations.
